This dramatic photo by Lincoln P. Brower shows millions of Monarch butterflies huddled together in the fir forest in Michoacan, Mexico in which they spend the winter. The golden hue is created by the Monarchs. Immediately adjacent is the scarred earth stripped bear by logging. Click on the photo to see a larger web-friendly version. Click here for hi-res.

The Monarch Watch 2000 in Central Park tagging event took place on September 22nd at 2PM at the Belvedere Castle in Central Park.

Parks Commissioner Henry J. Stern and Ambassador Jorge Pinto Mazal, General Consul of Mexico to the U.S. joined Monarch experts Chip Taylor of Monarch Watch and Lincoln P. Brower of Sweet Briar College, along with sponsoring company Mastervision, schoolchildren and other supportive visitors tagging monarch butterflies as they set off for Mexico on their annual migration. Mexican children in costume performed traditional dances and a mariachi band played as we said Buen Viaje to the monarchs in 2000.

This site is an archive of materials created for and about the event, and a resource for all interested in Monarch conservation issues. Please feel free to contribute relevant materials.
